Public hearings on SDGs held in Belarusian ParliamentDec 21, 2017
The public parliamentary hearings "Partnership of branches of power as a prerequisite for successful implementation of SDGs” took place in the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.
Opening the hearings, Chairman of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich stated: "Belarus is ready to contribute to the strengthening of the global partnership to achieve the SDGs and can serve as a platform for regional exchange of relevant experience, knowledge, technologies."
Marianna Schetkina, National Coordinator for the SDGs underlined a key role of the parliamentarians: “It is impossible to reach the SDGs without corresponding changes in the legislation. Our task is to mobilize all efforts to achieve real, concrete results."
UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha noted the enthusiasm with which the country joined in the work to achieve the Goals: "Belarus has implemented almost all the Millennium Development Goals. Now Belarus is entering the historical path of reaching the SDGs. The architecture of the SDGs achievement built by Belarus is impressive. The UN will promote the dialogue between Belarus and its international partners."
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Andrei Dapkunas underlined: "We are grateful to UNDP for the implementation of the project "Parliament and SDGs", for the active involvement of parliamentarians in the work on the SDGs achievement."
Following the results of the parliamentary hearings, priority areas for further activities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in Belarus were identified with relevant recommendations made to state bodies and organizations.
Parliamentary hearings were held with the support of the project "Support to the National Coordinator on Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals and Strengthening the Role of the Parliament in the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals" , which is funded by the United Nations Development Program. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs acts as the national executing agency. The partners of the project are the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus and the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus.Contact information
