Oct 11, 2017

Minsk hosted "Women's Entrepreneurship as a Factor of Sustainable Development" international conference to develop proposals to support women's entrepreneurship in Belarus in the context of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

“There is one crucial condition in Implementing SDGs – we all must act together: the public sector, civil society, the business community. We have here today three ministers, representatives of the National Academy of Sciences, the Parliament, representatives of all regions of the country. Let's work out concrete proposals”, said in a welcome speech Marianna Schetkina, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic, National Coordinator on Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals.

“We need to remove barriers to women’s access to all economic sectors. We need to put cheap capital into the hands of young women with great potential and then support new businesses as they grow. This is what UNDP is committed to do alongside with our partners”, underlined Zachary Taylor, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative.

According to the Minister of Economy Vladimir Zinovsky, any proactive person in Belarus, regardless of gender, can freely self-fulfill by opening his own business. The Minister promised that soon the approaches to doing business will be simplified.

"The influence of women in various areas of activity is increasing," said Sergei Nalivaiko, Minister of Taxes and Assessments. - Due to certain natural social and psychological qualities, a businesswoman has usually a reputation of a bona fide partner. Therefore, I am sure that in the process of small and medium-sized businesses development, the state should largely rely on supporting women's entrepreneurship."

The resolution adopted by the conference participants noted that ensuring gender equality is a prerequisite for sustainable development and the most important task in the field of realizing human rights and ensuring social justice.

The conference was held within the framework of the Week of Sustainable Development - 2017 with the The Support Programme of Belarus of the Federal Government of Germany and the UNDP project " Support to the National Coordinator on Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals and Strengthening the Role of the Parliament in the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals" support.
