UNDP and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland are teaming up to promote healthy lifestyles in BelarusOct 2, 2017
Sanaka Samarasinha, UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative, and Joanna Wronecka, Undersecretary of State for Development Cooperation, Africa, Middle East and Human Rights, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Poland, this Monday signed in Warsaw an agreement for USD 295,830 to support two projects on promotion of healthy lifestyles in Brest and Lida.
As outlined in the agreement, funds will go towards promotion of a healthy lifestyle and the development of inclusive sport and recreation opportunities for people of all abilities.
People of all ages have to be physically active to regain their sense of independence and mobility, and some of them may have bigger ambitions to became professional athletes. In this regard accessibility can be a problem, and development of all-abilities physical training and mass sports requires to find an appropriate solution to cope with this challenge.
The project in Brest, with total funding of USD 59,703, is aimed to create an inclusive multifunctional health center and organize a bike marathon in Brest and Brest region. The Lida project will help design and build inclusive bike lane that is accessible for cyclists of all ages and abilities. The total budget of the project is USD 236,127.
Both initiatives are bright examples of how partnerships between governments, communities and civil society are key to creating unique opportunities and removing barriers that prevent people from participating in broader community.
Poland has a profound experience in implementing development projects in Belarus that are part of its cross-border cooperation programmes. These programmes and initiatives encourage commitment of local players towards making positive changes at the regional level.UNDP Press Office
