The Winners of the II BELMED contest of local initiatives were announced in Minsk

The II contest of local initiatives "Be Healthy!" brought a lot of creative ideas.

The contest was held in Homiel and Brest Oblasts in the first half of the year (the I contest was held in Mogilev and Vitebsk Oblasts). This time, 125 organizations claimed to receive funds from the European Union. Representatives of UN agencies, the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Belarus and civil society took part in evaluation of applications.

In the end, 7 initiatives were recognized as the best of the best and received certificates and congratulations from Tatiana Migal, Head of the Department of Specialized Medical Care of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Belarus, Andrea Wiktorin, Head of the EU Delegation to Belarus, Zachary Taylor, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in the Republic of Belarus on August 17th.

Public Organization “APB-BirdLife Belarus” (the initiative "Be healthy with birds!") encourages both a healthy lifestyle and wildlife protection. A birdwatcher can walk 10-20 kilometers a day. Moreover, love for birds and our common habitat heals in general, according to the APB.Brest Oblast Youth Public Association “Person with Disabilities and Environment” will implement an initiative “Inclusive Center for Healthy Lifestyle". The inclusive area for promoting healthy lifestyle in microdistrict Berezovka of Brest will include tennis courts, billiards, darts, forest volleyball ground, bicycle path, etc. A health marathon will be also organized in the framework of the initiative.

«“Eat healthy, be active – it's great and efficient!” is the name of the initiative and the slogan of Biaroza Rayon Ecological Public Association “EcoRegion ‘Yaselda’”. The organization intends to combat the habit of young people to eat junk food on the run and promotes the idea of slow food. Also the Association plans to equip the center of active rest and healthy food on the basis of "Sporovsky" Reserve, to conduct master classes on healthy nutrition, etc.

Department for Education, Sports and Tourism of Svietlahorsk Rayon Executive Committee is also seriously concerned about what and how students and their parents eat. The initiative “Laboratory of Healthy Nutrition ‘ShkolnikAM’" provides master classes and video lessons on healthy nutrition, improves school nutrition units through the introduction of healthy nutrition technologies, etc.

Zhabinka District Organization of Belarusian Public Association of Veterans with the initiative "Way to Longevity" draws our attention to the need to involve the elderly in an active life. The Association will organize classes of Nordic and ski walking, bicycling.

Homiel Oblast Public Association of People with Musculoskeletal Disabilities “Invalidy-spinalniki” involves people with disabilities in physical culture and invasive activities. Athletics, swimming, basketball, sports dances, bocce game, as well as wheelchair race and Sport day for people with disabilities are planned in the framework of the initiative "From everyone's health to healthy society".

Public Association “Council of Fathers in Homiel” intends to revive the interest of adults and children to yard sport games at 5 sites in Homiel. The initiative "Yard Games Movement " offers conduction of courtyard tournaments in 5 types of sport: mini-football, streetball, frisbee, “knocking out”, workout.

Recently, the topic of a healthy lifestyle has gained a second breath in Belarus. Our behavior: smoking and alcohol abuse, unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle can be “the trigger" for development of heart attack and stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes.

The project "Prevention of non-communicable diseases, promotion of healthy lifestyles and support to the modernization of the health-care system in the Republic of Belarus" (BELMED) is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP, WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA in partnership with the Ministry of health of the Republic of Belarus in 2015-2019.

One of the project components being implemented by UNDP is the contest of local initiatives aimed at combating risk factors for the development of non-communicable diseases. Each winner of the contest concludes an agreement with UNDP on implementation of the initiative within the framework of the BELMED project for up to 50,000 euros.
