United Nations Development Program will support the National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Council for Sustainable Development on implementation of the 2030-Agenda

UNDP in Belarus in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, the National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus launch new project “Support to the National Coordinator on Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals and Strengthening the Role of the Parliament in the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals”.

The project will facilitate the development of national mechanism to ensure synergy between government bodies of the Republic of Belarus in implementing the 2030 Agenda through the institutes of the National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Council for Sustainable Development, as well as strengthen the capacity of legislative and executive authorities in implementing, monitoring and assessing the SDGs. The official announcement took place during a press conference on the Sustainable Development Goals on 2 August 2017, organized by the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.

“Belarus is very well positioned in terms of achieving SDGs, considering that almost all the MDGs were achieved before the deadline, - said UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha. – Now we should really focus our efforts on the most disadvantaged – the poor, children and vulnerable youth, older people, people with disabilities, people living with HIV and with non-communicable diseases, migrants, refugees – to make sure no one is left behind when we achieve the SDGs.”

Belarus has become one of the 44 countries to regularly report on the SDGs implementation status in the country on a voluntary basis. In order to monitor the results and achievements of Belarus in the struggle for social equality, economic prosperity, accountable and transparent state institutions, it requires engagement  and cooperation of government bodies at all levels, in particular, the prioritization and localization of the SDGs on a national scale plays a critical role in this process.

"If we want to achieve the Goals, then first of all we need to establish the system of execution, this is the most important. Vertically, it means cooperation with the international community, and horizontally, it is about coordination within the country," - said Marianna Shchotkina, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, National Coordinator for Achieving the SDGs.

The project is funded by the United Nations Development Program and will be implemented until 2018. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the national implementing partner. The project partners are the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus and the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus.
