Phyto-production helped to create new “green” jobs for local people of Myadel district

Jul 18, 2017

20 residents of Myadel district of Minsk oblast gained the opportunity of additional employment and involvement in economic activity in the sphere of phyto-production thanks to implementation of the pilot initiative within the project “Supporting the transition to a “green” economy in the Republic of Belarus” funded by the EU and implemented by UNDP.

The pilot initiative for creation and development of conditions and infrastructure in Myadel district for medical plants cultivation on the land of farm households and the land, provided by the local authorities and the company "BelAseptica", allowed to create the local community of people growing medical plants for additional earnings. Thanks to the pilot initiative today cultivation of four species of medical plants – valerian, calendula, cumin and echinacea – helps to improve the well-being of the local population.

Within the pilot initiative the local people were not only taught the aspects of medical plants growing and harvesting and supplied with seeds, but also provided with the equipment – tractor, plow, cultivator– for land treatment.

Local people involved in the pilot initiative had the opportunity to take land plots for medical plants cultivation. The area of about 20 ha was sowed with four plant species. About 4 ha of the area is occupied with valerian plantings, 8 ha – calendula, 6 ha – echinacea, 2 – cumin. Valerian and echinacea are cultivated on the soils of Limited Liability Company "BelAseptica", calendula and cumin – on the land of private farming households. Myadel executive committee allocated 8 ha of land for the local people for the purposes of the pilot initiative and Budslav rural executive committee – 2 ha.

Harvested by the local people plants undergo primary treatment in Myadel district and are used for production of pills, potions, phytoteas and cosmetic products manufactured by "BelAseptica".

Today about 40% of the total volume of medicines in Belarus are herbal preparations and interest to them from the side of medical workers and population increased significantly in recent decades. Creation and development of the infrastructure within the pilot initiative for medical plants cultivation by local people allowed to create conditions for replacement of imported medicine raw material by local.

Implementation of the initiative also had environmental effect – it allowed to draw unused lands into agricultural cycle without application of mineral fertilizers as well as to expand plantings of healing herbs on an industrial scale.

The pilot initiative was implemented within the project "Supporting the transition to a “green” economy in the Republic of Belarus", which aims at supporting the Republic of Belarus in generating “green” economic growth based on “green” principles, including environmentally sustainable and economically feasible use of natural resources, promotion of environmentally sustainable production and consumption, green jobs creation, changing target group's behavior towards greater environmental sustainability.

The budget of the project "Supporting the transition to a “green” economy in the Republic of Belarus", in framework of which 23 pilot initiatives were implemented, is 5 million Euro. Budget of the pilot initiative for creation and development of conditions and infrastructure in Myadel district for medical plants cultivation by local people is 110 000 Euro.
